 Alt CV thoughts
04-JUN-03: Well, the site is still under-construction and I have now been working on it for two weeks. I'm blaming everything that I am not getting done on my imminent exam (two days now!), so life will hopefully begin again on Saturday...

I'm also getting worried about how to decide when to launch the site. The site will be updated regularly and is designed as an ongoing project, but I am afraid of launching an empty-looking site.

The point of this post? To discuss the idea of the alternative CV. Whilst creating an HTML CV for this site, I felt that it didn't really communicate meaningful information about me to the reader. So far I haven't had a job that I 'knew' absolutely how to do when I started it. The point is that you learn how to do it, and cope with whatever is thrown at you at work. Surely the best skills to have then, are learning, coping, swift analysis, etc

The Alt CV evolved whilst I was writing it to include both some new and old elements with a slant on the skills for getting more skills and not just the skills themselves. These meta-skills are more important than their end products as meta-skills are more enduring, portable and useful to the employer. What I would like to achieve is a sufficient level of meta-skills to perform well in any situation. So far I think I can achieve this in a range of situations, but it is a life-long journey.

What worries me is that the Alt CV is very honest and that this will communicate more of who I am, but not get me a job. The traditional job-hunting process has often felt adversarial to me, with both 'sides' trying to catch each other out in order to find out in an hour or two if we will have a good working relationship for years. I'd much rather we could just have an honest chat...
