The idea behind introducing new concepts

This concept simply and elegantly describes the stages of learning:

  • Unconscious incompetence - you don't know that you don't know (e.g blissful ignorance)
  • Conscious incompetence - you know you don't know
  • Conscious competence - you know it, but only with effort (e.g. looking at the gear stick when you're just learning to drive)
  • Unconscious competence - you don't know you know it (e.g. driving with ease whilst holding a conversation with your passengers)

At the final stage the skill has passed into the brain as a new pattern or task that is repeated so often it is more efficient for the sub-conscious brain to do it for you.
