Looking at human capabilities by asking why did they evolve is a very powerful technique. Stuart Card and Peter Pirolli from PARC introduced these questions at the user experience 2003 conference.

3 key questions for an evolved system:

  • What environmental problem is solved?
  • Why is a given system a good solution to that problem?
  • How is that solution realised by mechanism?

It struck me at the time as a very powerful tool to use in designing and diagnosing systems. Since then I have also used this technique in my NLP course (Dave's diary of his NLP evening course) - to analyse my limiting beliefs. Suffice to say that it was a very insightful technique, use it with care…
