CV and Career change: the 'process'

You may have come to this page directly - This is part of the CV and job change 'process' - see the CV page for the full set of articles, advice, exercises and CV examples - everything you need to get going on your whole job change

Previous: Customising your CV

Before you start going public with your job hunt

Nowadays performing a basic background check on someone is as simple as a Google search. So before you start putting yourself out there, do a Google search on yourself. Seeing as people will do this anyway, it is better that you at least know what they are going to see, and ideally attempt to have some control over that as well.

If nothing else, if you are on facebook, change your settings so that only your confirmed friends can see your photos and personal details. Otherwise those "hilarious" photos of you dancing drunk will be your prospective employers' first sight of you.

Your electronic reputation aside, you also need to consider whether you are going to be "out" about your job hunt in your current job. Some people are happy to resign and then start looking for a job, others, like me, have a greater need for certainty and so search for a job whilst still drawing a salary from a current employer. Chances are that life will be less easy in your current role when they find out that you are going or trying to go, and you have to bet that they will find out (they may not, but it's best to be prepared). So consider how you will manage this possible situation and who (if anyone) you will tell about your hunt.
